Once upon a time, a young woman lived in a cottage in the woods, all alone. She hadn't always been alone. For most of her life she'd had her mother and, occasionally, her mother's strange guests. But ever since her mother had died and the strange man with the horns and the tail had taken her remains away, no strange guests came...

This is the story of Oriole, whose mother taught her herbs, and little forest magics, and who died and left a skein of secrets for Oriole to unravel. There's a witch and a woodcutter. There's a dragon and a wolf and a unicorn, too...
